The following calculation is only an illustration, not a universal take-home salary. Assumptions used: a direct recruit is at Level 10 first cell, basic pay is ₹56,100, Dearness Allowance is 60% as per the Department of Expenditure order effective from 01.01.2026, the officer receives HRA in an X-class city at 30% because DA has crossed 50%, no government accommodation is allotted, and higher-city transport allowance applies.
- Basic pay = ₹56,100
- Dearness Allowance = 60% of ₹56,100 = 60 ÷ 100 × 56,100 = ₹33,660
- HRA for X-class city = 30% of ₹56,100 = 30 ÷ 100 × 56,100 = ₹16,830
- Transport Allowance = ₹7,200 + DA on ₹7,200 = ₹7,200 + (60 ÷ 100 × 7,200) = ₹7,200 + ₹4,320 = ₹11,520

This is why two correct answers can look different. The official starting basic pay is ₹56,100. A monthly gross estimate can be higher, but only after stating the assumptions and the latest allowance orders. Net in-hand pay will be lower after deductions such as income tax, retirement contribution and other recoveries.
For UPSC posts and salary, do not assume that every service under the Civil Services Examination has the same rules at every stage. IAS, IPS and other services may share broad 7th CPC pay-matrix logic, but service rules, cadre posts, risk-related allowances and facilities can differ. This distinction is important because many online salary figures mix all three and call the result “monthly salary”. That is not precise. The safer term is “illustrative gross salary under stated assumptions”.
